Historical Characters Brought to Life in Yarn!
The Time Travel Trails across our brilliant cultural venues has finally launched into action at Baird Institute, Cumnock Burns House Museum, Mauchline and Dick Institute, Kilmarnock.
This amazing community project led by Michaella has brought together our fantastic Dean Castle Textile team, Yarn A Go-Go Knitting club on a Friday at the D.I. and Heather Dunlop from Burns Monument Centre. A big massive thank you to these fantastic and incredibly talented ladies are all volunteers, and have been busy since March bringing to life knitted characters for the trail. Lynn and Gus from the Sharing Our Vision team have brought to life incredible wee characters and creatures from the trail.
As you travel through the buildings, visit different times in history…the trails will lead you on a whirlwind tour to track down famous local figures and creatures
from our past which have helped shape our incredible Ayrshire history and future as we know it today! This trail covers the 18th to 20th centuries, tying up East Ayrshire’s museums.
Visit the 18th century at Burns House Museum and tellings of Robert Burns & Jean Armour’s life in their first home together and the many associated characters.
Take a whirl around the 19th century at the Baird Institute with Keir Hardie and the Suffragettes. Coming from Cumnock, KH became politically active at a young age, finally establishing the Labour Party. John Baird, the generous benefactor of the BI. The town has a proud history including mining, rural interests and sports achievements.
The Dick Institute in Kilmarnock given to the people by James Dick explores marvels of the 20th century. The town is famous for its many industries and associated characters. It was also a Volunteer Auxiliary hospital during the 1st World War.
